“Patriotism is a superstition artificially created and maintained through a network of lies and falsehoods; a superstition that robs man of his self-respect and dignity, and increases his arrogance and conceit”, as Emma Goldman said. In Greece, this superstition easily goes hand in hand with another; the one of the religion, while the Church claims one more time its “share” of the public speech and the political life.

Nationalism and religion go hand in hand in an attempt to call the common patriotic feeling and create a wave of protests for a Macedonia that belongs to the casebooks of history.

These superstitions armed the fascistic group that attacked without any interruption the “Libertatia” squat in Thessaloniki. A building which, both as an occupation and in the years before it has been occupied, hosted persecuted Jewish, Muslims, victims of Nazism, refugees, whoever is hated by the various nationalists and fascists.

Bringing the issue of the name of FYROM back up through the ongoing negotiations, various nationalist-fascist have the opportunity to come out of their hole and asseverate their superiority and their dominion over every voice on the other side, which prioritizes the internationalism and rejects every authoritarian ideology diverses people for a strip of land, for a superior tribe, for a chosen people. The protest of 21st of January was such an opportunity. In that case, with the coverage of more of the executive members of the clergy, fascists were allowed to roam free the protest.

One of the fascist pre-congregations, the one of the “Greeks’ Bonds” at the Hippocrates’ park with the participation of the “Committee of citizens of Oreokastro”, the “Sacred Band” and others nationalist groups, started walking on the Stratou Avenue and attacked the occupation of Libertatia with stones and torches. In parallel, fascists attacks were taking place in several places of the city and at the anti-fascists congregations in Kamara (Thessaloniki).

A few hours later, fascists attacked again Libertatia, putting on fire the neo-classical occupied building. By the time the fire brigade came at the spot, the building had been totally destroyed. Among the ashes and the cinders of hate, a slogan distinguishes, as a souvenir of fascist action, “PAOK 4 MACEDONIA GREEK LAND”.

As the prolonged arm of the state was working, the police of course were facilitating its work to take place uninterruptedly and make arrests during the anti-fascist protest, which was conducted two days later as a demonstration for the arson against “Libertatia” occupation.

This co-operation of nationalist and religion ideologies, which arms the fascists against the voices that oppose to the patriotic outbreaks and promote the internationalism and the solidarity, against all types of ideology of superiority, is sketched by the Brazilian cartoonist and activist Carlos Latuff.
